There is value everywhere

Choosing who is going to score any goals in fantasy hockey is pretty much a crapshoot on any given night.

We all know that players like Malkin, Ovie and Crosby are going to get a lot of points, but you never know when a grinder is going to surprise you and rack up an extra goal or two.
Case in point, last Friday's Leaf game against the Devils.
Colton Orr, notorious jober ends up in a break away match against the greatest goalie of this generation Martin Brodeur.

This doesn't mean go pick up Orr.
But it goes to show you, you don't know where your points are coming from some nights.

The goalie dilemma

In my main NHL fantasy pool their seems to be an overwhelming lack of available goaltenders.
Each fantasy manager has 2 slots for the goalie position and almost everyone has a negative games played for both of their slots.

I'm no different. Currently I'm sitting at -26 games between the two slots.
Ouch.

The one thing I have going for me at the goalie position is two decent starters, which is something a lot of teams lack.

I'm looking for a third goalie to eat up that negative games played stat.
This is the current top ten available goalies currently on the FA:

Slim pickings is an understatement.
When Vesa Toskala is one of the best available you know you're in trouble.
On a side note I'm surprised that he has won that many games.

I managed to get lucky today.
Another manager had dropped Pascal LeClaire after trading him for Malkin.
Not a smart deal.
So that looks like my best option for now.

Problems In Hockey

Hockey is my county's national sport.
It also happens to be the sport I have the second most amount of knowledge in behind baseball.

This is my first pool that is non head to head style.
I don't have a terrible team this time, yet I continue to suffer.

My played games stat was pretty high so I decided to bench everyone except my defensemen and goalies for a week.
I didn't lose any points in this time at all, I gained a bit in standings actually.

So now that my played games stat is back in order I started playing my forwards again and I'm losing points.

Here is the current breakdown in the stats:

I'm gonna keep playing forwards all the time and see what happens. If necessary I'll repeat this test of not playing them.

The worst of the worst

This is the only time I ever gave up completely on a fantasy pool. I drafted really poorly and left myself with a terrible team.

Here are the results:

This is the only time I ever finished dead last in any pool.
I'm giving basketball another try this year and things are going a little bit better.
The league was auto drafted, so it isn't completely my fault for all of my failures in that league.

First year results

Not too pretty....

I'm not sure how i ended up in in second last with the team that I had.

I guess you can chalk this one up to inexperience.

Team at the end of first year

This is the team I finished with in my first year:

One question arises from this.
How the hell did I get Ryan Howard from the FA list.
Your guess is as good as mine.

This team isn't terrible by any means.
Chin-Ming Wang had a dynamite year. As did Big Z.
My SVs are pretty awesome too.

You'll see what happened to this team in the next post.
